ENGLISH PROJECT FAIR – Courage and Perseverance
The main reason why we learn a language is to communicate our thoughts and ideas to the speakers of that language . Language learning is only meaningful if this objective is accomplished . Learning the structures and the individual components of the language is only a stepping stone in reaching this ultimate goal .
At Izmir SEV , we provide opportunities for our students to communicate their thought , ideas , opinions and beliefs through meaningful projects . Each English course customizes its projects to allow the practice of the skills taught and a demonstration of the achievement of its objectives . Core English lessons focus on projects that allow the correct usage of vocabulary and grammar structures while Language Arts focuses on strategies that allow students to acquire a deeper understanding of the texts they read and an appreciation for literature . Spoken Arts projects allow students to hone their oral presentation skills . Ultimately , all courses provide students with ample opportunities to express themselves in English .
This year , we studied the theme ‘ Courage and Perseverance ’ in our English lessons in grades 5-7 . Our students studied real and fictitious characters who demonstrated courage and perseverance in accomplishing their goals . Our Big Idea was that language learning requires courage and perseverance .
We wanted to share all our project work that we had completed throughout the year in an interactive project fair with our parents so that our students would have a chance of demonstrating their learning and showcasing their English skills .
Our English Project Fair took place on 28th March , 2016 on our West Hall Campus . Grades 5-7 students displayed their project work in an interactive way by reenacting scenes from books and skits that they wrote , reciting poetry , performing shadow puppet theatre , teaching parents how to plant seeds for hydroponic agriculture , quizzing parents ’ English skills with fun , interactive Kahoot games , allowing parents to watch embedded advertisement videos prepared by students in the QR-Jungle , inviting parents to watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory remake movies while eating popcorn , watching performances of Grade 7 Greek Gods and Goddesses and Destination Imagination Grade 6 Team and many more entertaining and inspiring displays and presentations .
