Once everything was explained there was a buzz from the classroom as everyone started to come up with ideas on what to write. Some wrote about their families, others wrote about the activities they participated in, some talked about school and others wrote very little and just drew funny pictures. All around the class it seemed like everyone was enjoying themselves and there was a child-like spark. “When you spend all day writing papers for school its nice to sit down and think simple for a change”. I personally drew an elephant.
In conclusion, the kids of B 5/6 had to step out of their realm of knowledge to make a small difference in the lives of children who need support and love. Hopefully every child that reads our letters will be happier because of it.
As people finished up with the
letter writing, it became
apparent that our class lacked
mailing experience. Annie came
to the rescue and made sure that
everyone knew where to put the
send address and return address.
She let us decide whether or not to
put our own address for the return
address or to put the schools. It was
cool to know that we might receive
letters back, it shows just how little I know
about mail. As the letters started to pile up
it was quite the site to see just how many letters
we had manged to write in our class alone. It’s
always satisfying to see what a difference people can
make if everyone pitches in.
The project began when Annie Chisholm started to write the names of all the kids that would be receiving these letters along with their gender, next to the name of the person in class who would
be writing said letter. Even at the very start it felt raw
and real seeing the names of the kids that these
letters would be going to. “”. Annie then gave
instructions on how the letters should be
written. She explained that these children
knew very little English, if at all, so the
letters had to be in simple English
and talk about basic things that the
kids would be able to understand.
She also said that pictures are a
good choice when writing to our
assigned child.
