Books for Kids

By Walter Plumb

Students at East High School teamed up to help people all around the world. This class is Ms. Turners English 2010 class from Salt Lake City Utah. These students spent their time on May 22 2019 writing short story books for children attending an elementary school in a low-income area.

There were about 20 stories created by these students. “I am happy to know that these kids will free stories to improve their reading skills,” Said Jack Idstrom one of the organizers of this service. Jack and James, who was the other organizer, told us that the stories we made needed to contain a plot with a beginning middle and an end but it needed to be kept simple for elementary students reading levels. They asked that the stories be at least 6 pages and be kid friendly. “I loved writing stories for the kids, my little brother would love these,” says Caroline Boyden, a student in the class who wrote a story. After we had written the books the organizers of the project proof read them to check for plot, grammar and punctuation. They did this because they wanted the students to improve their reading from these books, so they couldn’t have errors.

“I’m very impressed with everyone who wrote the stories, the kids will love these and it will improve their reading,” says Jack Idstrom. From what had been said and what I have seen I would say this service was a huge success. The volunteers outdid themselves with an amazing service and the kids will be receiving free books to improve their reading skills.
