THE FISHING: Fishing Areas
Growing up in Middelburg, I have fished the dam a lot and gotten to know the various spots that hold fish. Fortunately, there are so many bass in the dam that you are likely to catch a fish anywhere along the bank where there is a bit of weed growth. However, there are definitely spots that produce better at different times of the year and at different water levels. I have included a map of the best spots that we have identified over the years and will discuss how we fish these areas based on the time of year and water level.
Camping Grounds:
Even without a boat you can still fish the entire bank along the municipal camping grounds and will have great success. Some of the biggest early season fish have come out from the drop-offs in the corner to the east of the dam entrance. This is where we have done most of our fishing through the years and have caught plenty of fish along the entire stretch. The corner to the east of the entrance is definitely worth a look, especially if the dam is above 60% full. At lower levels the water pulls back and the ledges are generally not deep enough or on dry land. However, if the levels are low, the best option would be to drive all the way to the end of the municipal camping grounds and fish the numerous ledges and drop-offs in this area. This area is very deep and rocky and if dam levels are low you can easily reach deep water from the bank. During the pre-spawn this area is generally the most productive. fish from the bank
