Another difference was also that you could actually see the takes while nymphing, you could visually target the yellow and then watch as it moved towards the nymph to hit it. Not knowing if your next hook up will be a rainbow or a yellow (or both at the same time!) also added to the excitement. Both of us lost yellows that darted into the main current at an unbelievable rate of knots. I surely developed a healthy respect for those little 1.5 kg rocket fuelled golden missiles.

We ended a fantastic fishing day with a hot shower (first shower in 3 days) and a comfy bed at Motebong Lodge.

After a special morning fishing the Motete we were finally heading towards Katse or so we thought. About 20km before HaLejone the road crossed the Malibamatso via a low water bridge and by now the water had subsided to a fishable level. Unable to drive past such a sight we parked the Disco and embarked on a three hour fish fest where we landed more than 40 fish between us.

With the river still pumping, fishing dries or even dry and dropper would have been optimistic. I switched to my “Vaal” Euro rig (10ft 4wt with a 20m mono leader) and tied on a standard hot pink beaded mustard caddis on point and a #18 PTN on the dropper. It felt a bit like fishing the Vaal, except that the water was clear and clean and the scenery so much better.

A Red Letter day on the Malibamatso
