Modern meteorology is both a blessing and a curse to fly fisherman. With ever increasing accuracy and resolution it has saved my backside a few times (knowing that if me and my tiny Ark are not off Sterkies by 14h00 we’ll be in for some Southern Ocean swells). Unfortunately, in early February, it also predicted doom and gloom weeks ahead of a Lesotho trip that the editor and I have been planning for the best part of year.

After the first good rains since 2014 and some good snowfall late in 2017, the prospect of super skinny water was instantly replaced with a video of the raging Malibamatso River. Plans were put on ice as you can only add so much tungsten to your flies.

Incredibly after more than ten days of continuous rain, the forecast made a 180, promising of a week of sunshine. We figured a bad days blanking on a discoloured, raging river still beats a good day working, especially with the sun on your shoulders, and decided to take a punt and pack the Landy.
