•••• CO L U M N The doubtful can change the world MILANIE VOSLOO WE ALL GO THROUGH TIMES OF STRONG FAITH AND TRUST, OFTEN FOLLOWED BY TIMES OF ABSOLUTE DOUBT. TIMES WHEN WE WONDER IF GOD REALLY HEARS US, IF HE UNDERSTANDS WHAT IS REALLY HAPPENING IN MY LIFE AND IF HE IS AT ALL INTERESTED IN BEING PART OF MY LIFE. I f you are such a person, you are not alone. When the Lord called Gideon in the Book of Judges 6 to free his peo ple, he was busy threshing wheat on the floor of a winepress because he was afraid of the Midianites. When the Angel of God talks to him, he does not believe immediately. He asks for a sign to make sure that it is in fact God talking to him. Even after God gives him a miracle, he is still in doubt. He asks again: “If it is true what You say... show me. I will leave a wool fleece on the floor of the winepress. If there is dew on the wool fleece but the surrounding soil remains dry, I will know You want to use me...” God makes this happen, but Gideon asks again: “Do not be impatient with me. Can I ask one more time. Let the wool fleece be dry this time and the surrounding soil wet.” As we know, God did just that. The rest of the Gideon story tells how God miraculously delivers his people through one doubtful person, who does what God asks of him. God does not necessarily work with the brave and faithful. He works with and through you and I: People who feel weak, but they do what is asked of them. Faithful people who sometimes wonder, but they trust. Leaders who are also afraid, but they take up the challenge with God, they choose the right path, they live the truth... and they make a difference to the world. God is the God of the doubtful. Because He can work through them. Because he can prove that He can change peo ple - without weapons. He can make the world a better place, through them. Lord, I often put out my wool fleece because I am in doubt. Thank you for not getting impatient with me, but showing me time and again that You are God. My God, our God, South Afri- ca’s Father. 56 OCT/NOV 2017 • SENWES Scenario Win HOOP WAT KAALVOET LOOP Life is hard at times... just like a pair of uncomfortable shoes at the end of a long day.
