or a city boy surviving his
second year in the platteland, it takes a lot for me to be
impressed with anything vehicular
I might not have spied on the
speedy highways of the city of
gold. However, nothing I have
experienced in Egoli prepared
me for the sheer thrill of seeing
the John Deere 9570RX tractor.
Senwes Equipment Executive
Manager, Ferdie Pieterse, and I
took a drive to Wesselsbron in July
to deliver the first of these beautiful beasts to its new owner, producer Lourens van der Linde from
the farm Klein Constantia.
According to the John Deere
website, the 9RX Series tractors
are the perfect combination of
power, performance and intelligence all wrapped up in a 4-track.
With models from 470 to 620
engine horsepower, proven Final
Tier 4 engines, integrated technology and increased hydraulic
flow, the 9RX Series is all in to go
all out. Built to pull large implements through a variety of field

potential and profitability.
So I asked oom Lourens if he
was moved emotionally when he
laid eyes on the 9570RX. In typical farmer practicality he shrugged
it off with a laugh; “Ag not really,
farming is all about practicalities
and the 9570RX fits our rows on
the farm and it is optimal for performing on our sandy soils in this
neck of the woods.” But come-on
oom, “there must have been a
slight stirring of passion,” I insisted. “Nah, glad nie, farming is all
about being practical, the size of
the tracks fitted our system. And
of course the engine is in front,
which makes it heavy in front
and with the connection of the
implement at the back it balances
the weight distribution very well.”
So nothing? Not even a smidgen
of emotion? “Okay maybe a little
emotion,” he conceded with a shy
smile.
