CITY OF SPORTS As referred to earlier , Bloemfontein is a true city of sports and if there was ever any doubt , this was confirmed once again by our 400m olympic gold medal winner and world record holder , Wayde van Niekerk . In addition to Wayde , another legend in the athletics world , also from Bloemtein , is Zola Budd Pieterse . The sports stars yielded by Bloemfontein are legion , such as rugby legends like Os du Randt , Juan Smith and Francois Steyn , cricket legends Hansie Cronje and Allan Donald , swimmer Ryk Neethling and soccer legends Willem Jackson and Thabo Nthethe , to mention but a few .
Of course , we should also not forget about Rolene Strauss , our beautiful Miss World 2014 .

2010 HERITAGE Signs of the 2010 Soccer World Cup are evident all over the city , like the R245 million improvements to the Toyota Stadium as well as the R46 million upgrading of the Bram Fischer International Airport . The Toyota stadium is one of very few in cities in the world that can boast with having hosted a rugby world cup ( 3 matches in 1995 ) and a soccer world cup ( 6 matches in 2010 ).

THE FRANKLIN NATURE RESERVE This is really unique . Bloemfontein has one of the few nature reserves in the world which is situated in the centre of the city . The reserve was named after a former mayor of Bloemfontein in the 1920s , Sir John Stuart Franklin , and houses game such as blue wildebeest and zebras . Other cities with nature reserves within its borders include Hong Kong , Nairobi and Cape Town .
EDUCATION A number of exceptional primary and high schools as well as colleges in the district make a huge contribution to eductation .
THE UNIVERSITY OF THE FREE STATE The 112 year history of the University started in 1904 , when the dream of higher education in the Free State became a reality with Grey College , which accepted students for BA-degrees . The name changed through
