A RE A F O CUS The bronze statue of Nelson Mandela. important ones in this article. THE NELSON MANDELA STATUE The biggest icon in South African history guards the city. The Nelson Mandela statue was erected in 2013 as a symbol of unity. The 8-metre high bronze statue weighs a massive 3,5 tons and took 20 months to be completed at a cost of R4.6 million. It was erected in the heart of the city on Naval Hill. WOMEN'S MONUMENT In addition to the statue of Mandela, the Women's Monument also towers over the city. The National Women's Monument is a stone's throw away from the Bloemfontein Hinterland branch. The 35-metre high needle commemorates the 27000 women and children who died in the second world war. It is the handiwork of the well-known Anton van Wouw, who is also responsible for the statue of the woman and children at the foot of the Voortrekker Monument. THE EIFFEL TOWER The city is becoming more and more of an international city. Bloemfontein's famous Eiffel Tower, or the replica thereof, was erected by a private construction company in 1960.
