THE ANNUAL GOSA SYMPOSIUM WAS HELD AT
LANGEBAAN ON 16 AND
17 MARCH 2016. GOSA IS
THE GRAIN HANDLING
ORGANISATION OF
SOUTHERN AFRICA AND
ITS MAIN OBJECTIVE IS TO
PROMOTE THE PERFORMANCE OF THE GRAIN
HANDLING INDUSTRY.
V
arious well-known guest
speakers delivered addresses at the symposium. Dr Clem
Sunter talked about the world and
South Africa after 2016. He referred to trends relating to corruption, the quality of infrastructure
and leadership. His recommendation was that focus should be
placed on what South Africa does
well, such as the expansion of good
agricultural companies and private
schools.
Dr Roelof Botha was optimistic
that a sensible economic policy
would encourage the economy to
switch to a higher gear. Although
factors such as the drought, weak

leadership and high interest rates
are hampering the economy at
present, he believes that there is
a good chance for an upswing
during the second half of the year.
According to him the capital markets are not taking much notice of
a company's credit grading and a
stronger rand is foreseen.
Prof Kobus van der Walt
from the North West University,
Potchefstroom Campus, provided
an insightful perspective on the environment. He referred to climate
trends and how it will affect South
Africa in future. A huge concern is
the exhaustion of food, water and
energy sources due to population
growth and the expected pouring
in of people as a result of the fact
that a dry area is expected to form
north of South Africa within the
next 30 to 50 years.
Prof Van der Walt recommended that climate change be stopped
by means of alternative energy
sources such as wind and sun power, as well as the exploitation and
distribution of natural gas from
the Mozambique coast. Further
solutions for agriculture lie in
precision farming and the correct
flocculation of land. He concluded
with the thought-provoking statement that producers should farm
with land and not with maize.

AFTER THE launch of the
new website and application
on 18 February this year, the
number of readers increased
astonishingly. 94% of these users
were new to the platforms and
the platforms were visited 21
907 times during March 2016.
These figures hold huge
potential and it is of the utmost
importance to retain the number
of readers and to provide
reading material favoured by our
target audience in a sustainable
manner.
Our readers also enjoy the
online version of the Senwes
Scenario and a total of 1 049
visits to the February/March and
April/May issues were recorded.
The language allocation is
relatively unilateral with the
Afrikaans version accounting for
77% of this figure.
