Hot
summers
CARL KIRSTEIN
O
ur hot summers are the ideal breeding ground for
pests. Be on the lookout for any signs of deficiencies
in plants, such as brown spots on leaves, yellow stains, leaves
with dry ends, plant-lice, beetles, etcetera.
If you are unsure of what you are dealing with, take a branch
or leaf to your nearest garden centre for analysis. Please seal
it in a plastic bag to prevent the spreading of diseases!
We have to contribute towards a more healthy and less poisoned nature.
ALTERNATIVES TO POISON
• Four-leaved clover on lawns - spray with white vinegar
• Boiling water on weeds in paving
• Spray Jeyes Fluid around your house and garden to discourage ants and termites
• Alternative for newly planted and existing plants - use
Protec products. The difference will be noticeable. Place a
surface layer on the ground in order to decrease evaporation.
• Water gardens preferably after 17:00 or early in the
morning when it is cooler.
TIPS
1. All spring plants must be cut back to stimulate them for
a next flowering cycle.
2. Cut back roses for the next flowering cycle.
3. Hydrangers are starting to flower. Make sure they are well
fertilised and keep their feet wet. Cut off all dead flowers
in order to stimulate the rest.
4. Citrus trees must also be fertilised and kept wet to prevent young fruit from falling off.
Remember co-gardener: You can make a difference!
The December holiday is around the corner. Make sure
your fauna and flora are cared for. Look after that of your
neighbours and let them look after yours.
A blessed and prosperous festive time to all from Verdant
and staff.
