TWO EMERGING
FARMERS, SIMON TEFO
AND HERBERT MABUZA,
FROM THE SENWES
STABLE WERE HONOURED
BY GRAIN SA AT A
GLITTERING FUNCTION IN
BLOEMFONTEIN AS PART
OF THE SUCCESS OF THEIR
FARMER DEVELOPMENT
PROGRAM.
AUBREY KRUGER AND
ALZENA GOMES
S
imon Tefo received the accolade for becoming part of
the 500 ton club at the function
which was attended by more than
250 guests and 160 emerging
farmers. The 57-year old Simon
said that it was the first time that
he received the honour. He argued
that he actually produced 1 100
tons in 2016 during after only five
years of being a farmer. He farms
under the banner of Knockout
Trading and Projects and told
Senwes Scenario after the event
that he was a novice, but he now
sees how the event works and is
more determined than ever to
enter again: “I am motivated to
enter and win the competition
by 2018. I am going to win the
tractor.” Simon also remarked that
he knows that he will have to put
18
in even more effort as he admitted
that he still needs to learn a lot.
Herbert Mabuza was also
honoured for the first time. He
became part of the 250 ton club.
Herbert, an acclaimed journalist and editor back in the day
achieved this milestone after only
four years of farming on his farm
Blaauwbank, where
he started farming in
2013. The 67-year old
said that he eclipsed
the 250 ton barrier
quite easily as
he produced
a total of 460
tons and nearly
made the 500
ton club. But
he struggled a
bit, especially
with regards
to the drought
and his planter, but all in all he
can’t complain.
Both Simon and Herbert are
from the Randfontein area and
received their awards at the function from vice-chairman of Grain
SA, Preline Swart.
