What to do in your garden

P
lan your garden in order to get the best effect with
your plants to make your garden beautiful.
PERENNIALS
1. Remove dead leaves and old wood.
2. Split plants where necessary and replant in well-prepared
flower beds - plants such as flaxes and ornamental grasses.
Fertiliser and water well.
3. Plant new trees and shrubs, but take preventative control
measures against plant louse and mildew.
LAWNS
1. Do the “spring treatment”(mow short, rake well, feed,
level, cover with a blanket of organic lawn fertiliser and
wet well). Use red keel or earthworm compost to level any
areas which are not level. A good organic lawn fertiliser
such as Protek’s GRO GREEN is recommended.This
treatment is not recommended for tufted grass such as
Evergreen or Shade Over. Only for runner-type lawns.
3. Spray for mole-crickets with Protek’s MERIDIAN
5. Put lawnmower blades on a higher setting for the first few
cuts.
ROSES
1. A good time to prune roses is the end of July. Roses must
be pruned correctly - all old wood must be cut out, cut
the rose bush short to ensure new shoots. Make sure you
cut above a bud to the outside.
2. Seal all pruned shoots to prevent cutworm from boring
into the core of the rose.
3. Spray the rose bush with lime sulphur to kill all pests
which remained from the previous winter.
4. Remove all previous year leaves and branches from below
the rose bush. Cover the surface, but not close to the
stem.
5. Spray with Rosecare to protect against fungal diseases.
6. Should you wish to transplant your roses, now is a good
time to do it.
