Our Sol Star
MARLON COTTERELL
thats how my modelling
career started.
Arita: Between the two, which
is your passion, modelling or
music?
Marlon: Music is my passion,
denitely. Its how I express
myself. I stumbled into
Modelling, never in 100 years
would I have thought that I
would become a model, but I
do love doing it.
Arita: What inspires you to
keep doing what you do in
both your industries
M
arlon Cotterell has
been blessed with
looks and talent. The
Jamaican born Star is a model
and musician (of Rudimentals
fame), and I had the pleasure
of sitting down with him
recently and chatting about
his career and life. I have to
say he is one of the nicest
people and I came away from
this interview, inspired and
motivated, and those are
always my favorite
conversations to have.
Originally from Kingston,
Jamaica, Marlon admits that
as a child, he was a bit of a
trouble maker and the “class
clown” and says that he has
always loved making people
laugh and entertaining them,
which would later lead him
down the career path that it
has.
The “Rudimentals” band
member began his schooling
career at St Richards Primary,
moving onto Meadowbrook
High and later he went on to
study Political Science at The
University of West Indies,
proving that this Sol Star really
does have it all – Looks, Talent
and Smarts.
Arita: How did you get into (a)
music and (b) modelling
Marlon: I used to play cricket in
High School and on that team
i realized that most of the
members loved music. we
used to knock the desk and
spit lyrics. The captain of the
team, who was the son of one
of the best Audio Engineer in
Jamaica at the time said we
should take this seriously. We
decided to form a music
group and called the Group
Jag One Production (JOP).
We started with School
concerts and BBQs around
Kingston. Saved a bit of our
money and Built a studio and
the rest is history.
I was approached by the top
modelling agency in
Jamaica, Saint rrInternational,
to do a reality TV show called
“Model Icon”. I accepted and
Marlon: What keeps me going
in both industries is just my
drive to get better. Setting
short term goals and after
reaching them, setting other
goals. I Never get complacent
or comfortable.
Arita: Ideally where do you
see your career in 5 years
Marlon: Wow, good question! I
think I'll be done with
modelling by then. Music wise,
I want to start producing and
writing more songs for other
Artists. I Also plan on going into
Real Estate.
Arita: Modelling requires
healthy eating and discipline
with regards to health and
tness and your music sees
you spending hours in studio
and touring etc. How do you
balance these 2 worlds?
Marlon: It’s not that hard for
me to Balance. Most of my
modelling work, like
Gymming, Castings, Shoots
and so on happens in the day.
While Studio time, Rehearsals
and Gigs are mostly late in the
