Now there was a man named Joseph, a mem-
ber of the Council, a good and upright man, who
had not consented to their decision and action. He
came from the Judean town of Arimathea and he
was waiting for the kingdom of God.
Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. Then
he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and
placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no
one had yet been laid.
It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was
about to begin. The women who had come with
Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the
tomb and how his body was laid in it.
Then they went home and prepared spices and
perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedi-
ence to the commandment.
The resurrection
Luke 24:1-12
On the fi rst day of the week, very early in the
morning, the women took the spices they had pre-
pared and went to the tomb.
They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,
but when they entered, they did not fi nd the body
of the Lord Jesus.
While they were wondering about this, sud-
denly two men in clothes that gleamed like light-
ning stood beside them. In their fright the women
bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the
men said to them, “Why do you look for the living
among the dead? He is not here; he has risen!
“Remember how he told you, while he was still
with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be de-
livered into the hands of sinful men, be crucifi ed
and on the third day be raised again.’” Then they
remembered his words.
When they came back from the tomb, they told
all these things to the Eleven and to all the oth-
ers. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the
mother of James, and the others with them who
told this to the apostles. But they did not believe
the women, because their words seemed to them
like nonsense.
Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bend-
ing over, he saw the strips of linen lying by them-
selves, and he went away, wondering to himself
what had happened.
Matthew 28:1-10
After the Sabbath, at dawn on the fi rst day of the
week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went
to look at the tomb.
There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of
the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the
tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His ap-
pearance was like lightning, and his clothes were
white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him
that they shook and became like dead men.
The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid,
for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was
crucifi ed. He is not here; he has risen, just as he
said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go
quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from
the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee.
There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”
So the women hurried away from the tomb,
afraid yet fi lled with joy, and ran to tell his dis-
ciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he
said. They came to him, clasped his feet and wor-
shiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be
afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee;
there they will see me.”

Luke 24:36-49
While they were still talking about this, Je-
sus himself stood among them and said to them,
“Peace be with you.”
They were startled and frightened, thinking they
saw a ghost. He said to them, “Why are you trou-
bled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? Look
at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me
and see; a ghost does not have fl esh and bones, as
you see I have.”
When he had said this, he showed them his
hands and feet. And while they still did not believe
it because of joy and amazement, he asked them,
“Do you have anything here to eat?” They gave
him a piece of broiled fi sh, and he took it and ate it
in their presence.
He said to them, “This is what I told you while
I was still with you: Everything must be fulfi lled
that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the
Prophets and the Psalms.”
Then he opened their minds so they could under-
stand the Scriptures. He told them, “This is what
is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the
dead on the third day, and repentance and forgive-
ness of sins will be preached in his name to all
nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses
of these things. I am going to send you what my
Father has promised; but stay in the city until you
have been clothed with power from on high.”

John 20:24-31
Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the
Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus
came. So the other disciples told him, “We have
seen the Lord!”
But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks
in his hands and put my fi nger where the nails
were, and put my hand into his side, I will not be-
lieve it.”
A week later his disciples were in the house
again, and Thomas was with them. Though the
doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among
them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said
to Thomas, “Put your fi nger here; see my hands.
Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop
doubting and believe.”
Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen
me, you have believed; blessed are those who have
not seen and yet have believed.”
Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the
presence of his disciples, which are not recorded
in this book. But these are written that you may
believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and

Matthew 28:16-20
Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the
mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When
they saw him, they worshiped him; but some
doubted.
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All author-
ity in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them
to obey everything I have commanded you. And
surely I am with you always, to the very end of the
age.”
