Saturday July 28 Recap with Kyle Souza
As the season hits the second half, we are starting to find some repeat winners in our NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Saturday night divisions. This past week, as part of R.I. Shriners night, we saw four drivers carry the checkered flag once again.
In the Pro Stocks, the dominance from David Darling continues to be the story. Darling started deep in the field, but it wasn’t long before he was at the front and challenging Fred Astle for the lead. It also wasn’t long before he made the move by him into the lead. Darling was forced to hold rising star Dylan Estrella behind him for a few laps racing for the lead, but then it was clear sailing. He now has three wins this season, and opened his championship lead a little bit more as he looks to capture yet another title in 2018. The Pro Stock races over the last few weeks have been a little bit rough, especially in the middle of the pack, but Darling always finds a way to be at the front when the checkered flag is about to fall.
Ryan Kuhn is on a roll in the Late Models, and the roll is unlike any we have seen in the division in the last few years. Saturday, Kuhn started deep in the field, worked his way to the front, and ran a nearly perfect second half to score his third straight win. It’s clear that Kuhn is the fastest car, and he is quickly learning the fast way around the track, which doesn’t always have to be the bottom lane. With the No. 72 Everett’s Auto Parts Machine’s current handling, he can take the car just about anywhere on the track and have success.
Kyle Casper also continued what has been an impressive season in the Sportsman division, winning his second feature and becoming the first repeat winner in the division. The Sportsman class always puts on some great racing, and Casper started fifth, and quickly worked his way to the lead and never looked back. Behind the Lakeville, Massachusetts, driver, Scott Bruneau and Paul Lallier rounded out the podium as their fight for the championship lead continues to heat up.
The only other feature on Saturday was the Sports Trucks and it was Rob Murphy adding his name to the repeat winners list. Murphy had to hold off Mike Duarte and Bobby Tripp on a late restart, and even though Tripp crossed the line second, he still was a winner. Tripp scored the championship in the Phil’s Propane Triple Crown Series in the Everett’s Auto Parts machine. Congrats to Tripp, who is the first Phil’s champion of the year!
