CROWN A FINAL CHAMPION
For those unaware, the 2017 season will see the two SYRA divisions combine into one action-packed class. The SYRA (Seekonk Youth Racing Association) class has been one of the divisions that we see lots of first time winners in. Each week it feels like we are welcoming a new driver into Everett’s Auto Parts Victory Lane and you can expect the 2017 season to be no different.
The list of entries for the season has multiple drivers returning for another run at the class. Maddie Harkin will be back in her No. 4, as the Portsmouth, R.I. native looks to continue to improve behind the wheel. Over the last few weeks of last season, she was among the fastest cars on the track each week.
Zachary Martinez is back for another year and he was another one of the drivers that turned some heads down the stretch run of last year. Martinez, who comes from North Kingston, R.I., visited victory lane late in the season and showed that he could seal the deal. He comes into this season one of the championship favorites.
Ava Chouinard is back in her No. 6, helping Harkin and Ella Sprague lead the female contingent in the class. Chouinard, the daughter of former Pure Stock champion Bill, is hoping that she can also continue some success and ride the momentum from the end of last season.
Hugh Bowser is back in his No. 22 as he continues to follow in the footsteps of his father Hugh, a successful Sports Truck competitor in his own day. Hugh’s sister Taylor also competed in the SYRA division and won plenty of races. Expect Hugh to contend for his first victory this year and be a consistent front-runner.
Kyle Pianka continues to follow his father Craig’s racing path as he returns in the No. 66 from Smithfield, R.I. Kyle was always the one that was in the wrong place at the wrong time last year, with plenty of bad luck hitting him along the way. He will hope to rebound and collect a few victories this year.
Names like Zachary Levesque and Michael Cooper will also join the division this season as contenders for the Rookie of the Year honors. These drivers will have a learning curve early in the year.
As always, the SYRA division showcases the upcoming talent at the Action Track of the East. With drivers relying on their parents and fellow competitors for advice and experience, the season is always one that shows plenty of growth with the drivers.
