The one position that the SEC continuously puts into the NFL is the defensive backs. That said it’s a position with low returners of high praise coming back this year. In fact, the top three listed are sure fire draft prospects while the rest on the list are debatable at best.

Here are the top 5 defensive backs going into spring 2014:

5. Jalen Mills, CB, LSU(JR)

4. Robenson Therezie, Star, Auburn(SR)

3. Landon Collins, S, Alabama(JR)

2. Cody Prewitt, S, Ole Miss(SR)

1. Vernon Hargreaves, CB, Florida(SO)

When talking about SEC defensive backs its almost a must to include a guy from LSU and not by default its Jalen Mills. Mills is one of many on a group of talented defensive backs but he stands out finishing third on the team in tackles with 67 and three INT’s. Look for John Chavis to lean on Mills going into the 2014 season as a leader in the secondary.

Therezie is a hybrid of linebacker and safety for Auburn playing the “Star” position. Make no mistake, his playmaking ability commands the offense’s attention considering he made 55 tackles and four INT’s that came in crucial moments for the Tigers to pull out needed wins last season on their way to the championship.

Collins is a guy who is considered by most as an NFL safety after his 2013 campaign that didn’t even feature him as a starter. With Sunseri out Collins was given the opportunity to shine in what was considered a hap-hazard Alabama secondary and boy did he ever! He went on to rack up 70 tackles and earned the reputation of being one of the best tacklers in college football.

The All-American Prewitt is arguably the No. 1 on this list by some analysts and is most definitely a NFL player. Prewitt racked up 71 tackles and managed to lead the SEC with six INT’s last season all the while showing he is just as physical as he is talented in taking the ball away from recievers.

Hargreaves has been compared to Patrick Peterson, although he may not be as explosive, he does bring a skillset that is unmatched. What sticks out the most about Hargreaves is the ceiling that is still obtainable by him that will make him one of the elite not just in the SEC but on the next level. Some corners have speed and somewhat mediocre hands while others have the opposite. Hargreaves is the perfect storm of speed and hands with smooth transition in and out of breaks. He should be one of the best corners in the league in 2014 after earning pre-season All-American honors.
