Through the Family Tree
Sea Island has played an important role for
another American first family, the Bushes,
beginning in 1945 as the site of George H.W.
Bush and Barbara’s honeymoon. The pair
has returned several times, both during and
after Bush’s presidency. In 1991, he also
planted a commemorative live oak while
vacationing at the resort, and together they
returned in 1995 to celebrate their 50th
wedding anniversary.
