Inverness from the turn of the 20th century had a small Jewish community, the most northerly in Britain. The Finkelstein family, Isaac and his wife Fanny appear in the 1901 census living at 64 Main St, Gorbals, Glasgow. Both natives of Russia, Isaac was 24 and worked as a jewellery traveller. By the 1911 census they had moved to Inverness and were living at 14 Charles St with their two children, Morris and Lilly. The census states Isaac was from Germany and Fanny from Russia. Neither were British subjects.
