Recognizing Restaurant Burnout and
Dealing with Restaurant-Related Stressors

any workers, especially those who work in environments
with many distractions, such as a busy restaurant, experience
on-the-job stress. Working in a restaurant can expose employees
to demanding customers, loud noises and long shifts on a regular
basis, and it can be a lot to handle. If there are not steps taken
to counteract the chaos, these job-related stressors can lead to
burnout, health problems, injuries and even job failure.
Chronic Stress Triggers
Though everyone is different, there are universal triggers that
may create stress for restaurant workers. These include: having
little control over your work, demanding customers, busy or late-
night shifts, standing for long hours, and environmental stressors
such as large crowds and loud noises.
As these stress triggers can occur frequently, look out for early
symptoms of stress, and take steps to relieve it. Be alert for the
following symptoms, which can develop into more serious health
complications such as heart issues and depression. Those triggers
include insomnia, short temper, headaches, upset stomach, job
dissatisfaction and difficulty concentrating.
Taking a quick “breath break” can
dramatically increase a person’s
feeling of calm. If someone is feeling
stressed, have them take 10 deep
breaths. This simple action slows
their heart rate, allowing them to
relax and reset their perspective.
Stress the importance of a balanced life. Employees should
make time for family and friends when they are not at work, and
spending time with people they enjoy will help them unwind.
