“Managers check the ID against a manual we have with each state license and what to look for with that given license,” said Sullivan. “We also purchased the latest ID applications that scan the license and cross check to ensure they are not fake. These applications are only somewhat reliable, so we back that app scan up with ID scanners, which have infrared lighting to highlight watermarks in the license to ensure they are, in fact, legitimate.” Although precautions are put into place, Sullivan notes that responsibly serving alcohol still isn’t a walk in the park. “These are all safeguards for ensuring we are serving legal patrons of age, but those companies that produce fake IDs are always a step ahead of the technology,” he said. Managers also suggest not discounting alcohol in order to avoid any trouble. While it may be tempting to offer a good deal on the products that students want, most agree it is not worth the risk. “We rarely discount alcohol so that it doesn’t encourage heavy drinking, and by serving a selection of higher quality craft beers, it appeals to the connoisseurs versus the binge drinkers,” said Jeff Ousley, director of operations with Bulldog BWW, LLC, which owns locations near the University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University. “It does create a little bit of a challenge, but if you work closely with your ABC agents and reinforce RASS training, you don’t really have to be concerned about serving minors.” Pricing alone may be enough to deter underage drinking in some markets. “We have to constantly monitor RASS adherence, but it is not a problem,” said Ray DeNardis, general manager for a Four M Capital restaurant located less than 500 feet from the Yale Kale Vanderiet, employee and bartender with Anderson Management Group, serves a patron at a Billings, Montana, Buffalo Wild Wings. University campus. “We are not really frequented by underage individuals. Our price points on alcohol are fairly high, and the student groups tend to be very price conscious. Between the pricing and our reputation for zero tolerance on IDs, the issue rarely surfaces.” S CHRISTINA CANNON is the FBS communications manager.
