ARTICLES REPORTS STANSW Chemistry Conference, 2018 Report By Deborah de Ridder The Chemistry Conference was held on 14th May, and STANSW again wishes to thank Macquarie University for their continued support of STANSW conferences by hosting this event. The first Chemistry Conference was held in 2012, and it has since become a popular annual event. The workshop presenters included an inspiring line-up including Vatché Ansourian, Jeanette Hurst, Samantha Dreon, Helen Wastie, Louise Water, Margaret Shepherd, Anjali Rao and Trish Stockbridge. The quality of all these workshops was outstanding, and the range included Module-specific workshops, Working Scientifically, Depth Studies and Science Extension. It is apparent that there is a great need for further Professional Learning on the Science Extension course, and STANSW will aim to provide further opportunities later in the year. Watch this space! This year Alison Roger from the Department of Molecular Sciences gave the Welcome presentation, followed by the keynote presenter, Associate Professor Joanne Jamie from Macquarie University. She spoke about her work in Organic Chemistry, and the Biosecurity Futures Research Centre at Macquarie University. Her presentation supported the introduction of Organic Chemistry in the Stage 6 Chemistry syllabus, and gave some insight into biochemistry research. The second keynote address was by Dr Abidali Mohamedali of the Department of Molecular Sciences at Macquarie University. His presentation was “Fostering Entrepreneurial thinking in the HSC Chemistry Curriculum”. NESA is very supportive of STANSW events, and a NESA presentation was given by Corlina Ho, who gave some background into Stage 6 assessment and exams. The Chemistry conference provided highly valued support to Chemistry teachers, and allowed the conference participants to engage with contemporary academic research.
