STANSW ‘BEEINS’ Conference, 2018 Report
By Deborah de Ridder
The BEEINS Conference was held at Macquarie University’s
“Muse Centre” on 19th March 2018, and was the first STANSW
conference of the year. The conference was filled to capacity.
Participants benefited by a fantastic line-up of presenters, and
plenty of opportunity to catch up and collaborate with other
science teachers. This year the conference included Stage
6 Investigating Science, Biology and Earth and Environmental
Science. Abi Hanna, Silvia Rudman, Jenny Richmond, Brian Atwell, Julie
Rogers, Lucy Hawkings, Diana Entwistle, Despina Hatzimanolis
and Ann Hanna. Participants could choose from subject specific
workshops, depth studies workshops, Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander links to the curriculum and Working Scientifically
skills workshops. It is evident that there are some highly talented
science teachers in NSW, and their willingness to share their
expertise is remarkable.
The conference began with a welcome, then a choice of two
keynote presenters, including Dr Katrin Sjoquist from Translational
Cancer Research Network – oncology – who presented to the
Biology teachers, and Charlie Lineweaver who spoke on Earth
and Environmental Science. The final presentation by NESA’s Dr Sofia Kesidou provided
background into the new style of HSC that will be introduced
in 2019. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions and
clarify their understanding of the new HSC and the new style of
questions.
A wide range of outstanding workshop presenters included:
Susan Filan, Margaret Shepherd, David Harrington, Jihanne Macquarie University and our sponsors are thanked for supporting
