Why does the Humpback sing?

Dave Lonsdale

The human language has long been thought to be the only true language on earth, but when a study in 2006 was published in the journal of the Acoustical Society of America confirming mathematically that humpback whales had a hierarchical structure of song, many people were unsure if humans really were the only ones with a true language. Humpback whales, gigantic 48-foot aquatic mammals, sing harrowing songs, creating a unique rhythm for the world’s oceans. Until fifty years ago, no one knew whales sang, but now whale song has become one of the most well known animal noises. Still, after much research and effort to uncover the secrets of humpback whale song, it remains a mystery why Humpback whales sing.
