SciArt Magazine - All Issues | Page 4

Letter from the Editor From crochet coral reefs to paper microbes to plaster neurons and more, it is with pleasure that I introduce the June issue of SciArt in America. Our three Straight Talk artists this June include sculptor Judith Modrak— whose work graces our front cover—paper artist Rogan Brown, and James Gurney, best known for his Dinotopia series. While the visual arts dominate the realm of science-based art and many of our pages, it remains our mission here at SAiA to highlight all of the arts. Chiming in from the world of dance we have an in-depth Q&A with the makers of Biophony, a dance performance that touches upon numerous scientific fields including animal behavior and bioacoustics, recently performed at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. And from the world of creative writing, we are thrilled to publish the winner of our flash fiction contest, held this year for the first time. As you will read in the following pages, writer Peter Sutton explores the theme of ecology through his character’s alien, yet familiar, point of view. For our Spaces & Places this issue we feature the virtual space of the brain-mapping game EyeWire. Merging the goals of science with the visualization tools and techniques of artists, EyeWire is tapping into the emerging trend of citizen science via the video game platform, making it easier than ever for the general public to engage with neuroscience in a meaningful way. Continuing our custom from last year, our upcoming anniversary issue this August will feature the thoughts of our readers on a particular science-arty question (not yet announced)—so stay tuned! And enjoy. Sincerely, Julia Buntaine, Founder & Editor-in-Chief 4 SciArt in America June 2015
