School of Arts and Sciences Review Winter 2014 | Page 3

A Message from the Dean DR. WOLFGANG NATTER W EDITORIAL AND DESIGN The School of Arts & Sciences Review was produced by the Office of Marketing and Communications at St. Bonaventure University. Contributors Julia Andretta, ’15 Emily West, ’13 Photography Danny Bush, ’13 Tom Donahue, ’74 Michael Hastings elcome to the second annual Review of the School of Arts and Sciences. This publication provides a snapshot of the activities, events and achievements of the faculty, students and staff in the School of Arts and Sciences. The pages that follow provide evidence of our school’s commitment to a learnercentered, student-focused culture of teaching, research and community service, guided by our Franciscan values of discovery, community and individual worth. The School of Arts and Sciences is composed of 16 departments and we offer majors and minors spanning the natural, social, and human sciences, as well as the arts. You can see a full list of our majors at www.sbu.edu/artsandsciences. Forty percent of St. Bonaventure’s undergraduate students are enrolled in academic majors offered by the School of Arts and Sciences. In addition, our faculty members touch the lives of every undergraduate student who attends St. Bonaventure through their teaching of the University’s core curriculum and the Honors Program, as well as through courses that are part of the degrees offered by the schools of Business, Education, and Journalism and Mass Communication.. Also housed in the School of Arts and Sciences is the Major Adventures Program (MAP), which serves students who wish to explore multiple academic options before selecting their major area of study. MAP students are assigned a faculty adviser who helps them to select that academic major by the sophomore year, keeping them on track for graduation in four years. Some students choose our Individualized Major that enables them to design their own curriculum with the guidance and direction of a team of faculty advisers. It is our faculty who make the student experience unique and personalized at St. Bonaventure University. Whether it is through our Center for Law and Society, SBU Theater productions, concerts, art exhibits, scientific research, or the Honors Program, our faculty make student engagement a top priority every day. The pages of this issue will take you into our labs for chemistry, writing and biology; behind the scenes with the editor of an important theology journal; into the fray of competition with SBU’s Model U.N. team; and introduce you to student capstone and Honors projects as well as some of our faculty’s recent published research. Beyond this publication, further evidence of the high-impact learning experiences of our students can be seen at www.sbu.edu/highimpact. It would be my pleasure to answer any questions you have about the academic and co-curricular programs of the School of Arts and Sciences at St. Bonaventure University. I look forward to hearing from you. Dr. Wolfgang Natter, Dean School of Arts and Sciences St. Bonaventure University [email protected] 3
