Deep Six By Alyce-Hannah Golderer Photos by Alynah Brown T he more things change, the more they stay the same. This old phrase is used to describe a lot of things, but it can also very easily be said about one of the most popular bands in Augusta, Ga. A band that has changed its members and its music over the years, but has essentially remained the same - the hard rocking, good-time band Six. With over one thousand fans on ReverbNation, over twice that many friends on their Facebook page, and the fact they are just giving away music to anybody who wants to hear it, some might say Six is just going a little deeper down the rabbit-hole of rock music. The guys in the band might or might not agree. Lead vocalist, bassist, and all-around friendly front man, Jay O’Brien VI, said they owe everything they’ve accomplished since they officially became Six in 2009 to their multitude of fans. “We build relationships with our fans,” O’Brien said. One of the two guitarists and also keyboard player, Tony Bennett, whose harmony slips smoothly into place like a naked body sliding into silk sheets, was in com- Page 8 plete agreement. “When you come to one of our shows, we want you to have as good a time as we are having,” Bennett said. “We want you to feel just as amped-up as we do.” O’Brien said that Six has a serious methodology they use to help them decide which style, out of the many they are capable of, to play at a particular show. “Fan interaction is the focal point,” said O’Brien. “We make a set list geared just for that show, just for that crowd. At the same time, we try to complement the other bands’ styles of rock, but mainly the headliner’s, though.” Being able to play, and always having material ready, from any rock genre has definitely been a good decision
