Falling Through April
by John Smithson
F
alling Through April blurs the lines of the most
intriguing sound of Rock and Alternative music
from the 90’s through today. The music itself is comprised of artful and melodic vocals accented by uniquely songful guitars. The dramatic yet mellow bass lines
all driven by energetic and dynamic drums. Each member of this distinct band brings a different style and influence that procreates the chaotic beauty that is now
Falling Through April.
Created in late July 2011 from former members of
Manic, Strange County, Sleep In Sacrifice, and Interstate North, the band has blossomed into a significant
part of Charlotte’s independent Rock scene, gaining
support at every turn.
Falling Through April has performed at the 2014
Warped Tour, live on National TV during the Democratic National Convention, was featured on the front
page of www.ReverbNation.com, Peaked at #1 on the
Reverbnation Alternative charts, organized and headlined a US national tour, self released a 10 song album,
featured on UK and US websites (Reverbnation - US,
EventThrill - US, Songeist - UK, Rocknation - UK),
was featured in various newspapers across the US, and
opened for several national acts.
It’s safe to say that Falling Through April is a band
with a promising future and will be heard for years to
come.
After reading all that on their facebook page I wanted to know more about this awesome band. So I asked
the band for a Q & A session.
Your band name, where did that come from and
what’s the reasoning behind it?
The band name is an ever changing story. The original story is really boring so we just kind of ‘wing it’
every time someone asks haha. I think one time we told
someone it was the name of a deaf Golden Retriever or
something. Basically FTA comes from a fusion of different ideas. To keep it short and sweet though “Falling” comes from a time when a former band was falling
apart and really seemed like things were going downhill, “Through April” had to do with birthdays in the
month of April...put them together and it just seemed
to flow. So, we went with it!
So when did you guys start as a band. Has anyone
played in other bands together?
We’ve been together since July 2011. Seems like just
yesterday but we’ve had an incredible journey from then
to now. Matt Carlson, our current vocalist, joined the
band back in December 2013. We’ve all played in bands
all over the Carolinas and eventually came together to
form a brand new project. Having Matt with us has
been a lot of fun and really works well with the style and
sound we are moving towards. Although he’s only been
with us for less than a year it feels like he’s been with us
from the very beginning and we’re happy he can put up
with all of our difficult personalities!
Who are some of you guys influences?
Would you say that’s where you get your sound from?
It really depends who you ask in the band. We all
come from such an eclectic background and our tastes
in music are all over the place. More currently bands
like Paramore, Incubus, Panic! at the Disco, Story of the
Year, Switchfoot, Joe Bonamassa, Aerosmith, even artists like Sia inspire us to challenge ourselves and continue to evolve as musicians.
Do you guys play shows often? Do you have any upcoming shows?
All the time! 2014 has been our busiest year as a
band thus far. We’ve played some killer shows and have
a ton lined up. We’ve had the pleasure of traveling all
over the country and playing with The All-American
Rejects, Less Than Jake, Yellowcard, Anberlin, Of Mice
and Men, we had Warped Tour in Charlotte, NC on
Monday 7/28/2014, Cutting Edge music festival in New
Orleans, LA in August, Dewey Beach Music conference
in Dewey Beach, DE in September, we played 2 of the
4 dates on the Florida Music Festival in Orlando, FL....
it’s been an unreal year for us - definitely cannot say that
enough and we have a lot of people to thank for supporting us along the way.
to play? What is it that makes that place your favorite?
We’ve played at so many different venues all across
the country but there are definitely a few that stick out as
favorites. Not because they are crazy ridiculous venues
but more because of the people we worked with there.
Amos Southend in Charlotte is a great venue. Phil, the
sound guy, is our absolute favorite sound guy to work
with and we’ve told him we’re taking him on the road
with us! The Sparrow in Charleston, SC is awesome because of the people that work there. They owner actually made us Spaghetti when we played there (they don’t
serve food, they just knew we were hungry touring musicians!). Celebrate Fairfax festival in Virginia is always
a ton of fun and they treat us like royalty. ANYWHERE
in St Louis - simply because it is such a beautiful city.
Any excuse to go there and we’re all in!
