Sceneazine.com Poor Man’s Fame By Jenny Johnston P oor Man’s Fame wasn’t always an original band. We started as a cover band in late 2010 covering everything from Audio Slave to Mudvyane, all with a female singer! We covered what we liked and had a ton of fun doing it. In 2011 we made a promo CD with our versions of some of the songs we covered so we could market ourselves and start booking shows. We also uploaded them to MySpace where they could be heard around the internet. After a few months of our songs being on MySpace we were contacted by a label scout and asked about writing our own material. We hadn’t really thought too much about it but we tossed it around for a while. In spring of 2012 we went to Atlanta and recorded our first original “All or Nothing” with producer Alex Rexroat with Universal Recording Company/Pendlewood Studios. That single landed us a 2 year record deal with private label Public Records/Medical Records. The single also grabbed the attention of other veteran musicians that inquired about doing some collaborations. In the spring of 2013 we went back to finish recording our debut album and in October of 2013 we released “Tell The Story”. We also released our cinematic video to our first single off that album “Narcissistic”. Our songs have been played across the country on a host of internet radio stations, local radio stations, college campus radio stations and in stores and sites in Europe. We have also been fortunate enough to perform in venues from South Carolina to Virginia, This band doesn’t mind traveling! Our Next Album release is set for Summer 2015! With three more song left to record,we have been traveling to Ohio to work in the Pendlewood Studios up there. So stayed tuned for more Poor Man’s Fame. To contact us [email protected]. Let’s start off by introducing the band. Who are the members and what instruments do they play? Tricia Kimbrell-Singer Kirt Kimbrell-Guitar Chad Cope-Bass Randall Hargrove Guitar & Backing Vocals Joey Garrett-Drums Let’s assume that the readers have never heard of your band. What do you want them to get from this interview? At least learn a little more of our influences and how to write as a band. We are a straight forward band that loves jam and is very personable. There are great local acts around and getting to know some of them more might just help expand the local scene! So how long have you guys been playing in this band? Tricia and Kirt since 2010, Chad 2012, Joey 2013 and Randal since 2014. Is this everyone’s first band they’ve played in or have they played others we may of heard of? Randall was in Brave the Pain. Joey was in The Jupiter Tide. Chad Copy was in Pray For Rain (a local touring band in the 90’s) and various bands. Kirt has been in various bands and Tricia…it’s her first band. Who in the band came up with your name? Tricia did What, if any, reason did you guys choose it? Does it have a meaning behind it or does it stand for something? We, and a ton of other musicians, seem to always be needing money so the Poor was very literal. The Man part was kind of a joke since we are female fronted. That leaves the Fame part in question. And no it’s not delusions of grandeur...it’s about being comfortable with what and where you are in your musical endeavors. You can always claim a victory if you achieve a goal for yourself. music influences and sometimes reading a book or life in general can inspire an idea for a song. It really goes back to emotion and the way it makes you feel. It seems that is why music therapy is getting so popular. Music has the power to spark an emotion! Take an Alzheimer’s patient, maybe they don’t communicate really any more but when an old song from their youth is played you can see it in the eyes or maybe they try and sing it. Music just has the power to move people. Our Process: We commit and say this is a practice for writing a new song. We hammer out some rifts and it forms from there. Sometimes it’s quick and sometimes we scrap it. We make sure that what we come up with has a pattern. We want the music to have a definite verse and chorus distinction. If we find that groove then a song is born. I don’t know how to explain the vocal melody…it just seems easy to find the pitches that match the chord structures within the music. Then you just start to tell a story with the words the emotion of the song calls for. If someone wanted to hear your music where could they find it? Do you have a Soundcloud or ReverbNation account? If you look us up online within any search field you can land on a number of sites where our music is, www. poormansfame.com is our official website. You can find us on iHeart radio, Pandora, Spotify, Is there one person who writes all the songs or do you guys write as a band? It used to be Kirt and Tricia but as we got comfortable with each other styles and personalities we seem to be able to just take off and build from one another. Where do you guys usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is you guy’s usual songwriting process? Personal Experience for lyrics or a “what would I think if this happened to me.” The guys get theirs from their Page 15
