SCENE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES Spring 2017 STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK For Friends and Alumni Cyber Security Education at RCC Earns National Recognition Jeanette Geller (center), Associate Professor/Chair of Cyber Security, works with students Bhasker Chetiyaar and Alexis Aguirre. T he National Security Agency (NSA) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently designated RCC as only the second community college in New York and one of only 40 institutions in the nation as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Two Year Education (CAE2Y). Events around the globe highlight the growing need for skilled cyber security experts to protect online transactions, data, and communications. To fulfill the rigorous requirements to gain this prestigious designation, RCC developed an online Center for Cyber Defense (sunyrockland.edu/go/ cyberdefense), which includes a wide range of information and resources for the public as well as for students. Resources include a dynamic map of actual cyber-attacks in real- time (map.norsecorps.com). The College also needed to meet additional criteria including faculty qualifications and curriculum path. RCC’s certificate will be awarded during the 9th Annual Cyber Summit, June 6-8 in Huntsville, Alabama. RCC had already received national recognition in 2008 for mapping its Cyber Security curriculum to the Committee on National Security Systems’ (CNSS) Information Assurance training standards, with recertification in 2013. RCC graduates with an AAS in Cyber Security transfer to a range of four-year institutions including Mercy College, Pace University, and St. John’s University. Some alumni have earned the CyberCorps Scholarship for Service funded through the National Science Foundation. This scholarship includes full tuition, fees and a stipend. Cyber Security courses also prepare students to enter the workforce with industry- recognized certifications, including Cisco® CCNA, Microsoft® certifications, and CompTIA® A+ and Security+ and Network+ certifications.
