Non-Ferrous Metal Industries
Association of South Africa wishes
SEIFSA a very Happy Birthday
T
he Non-Ferrous Metal Industries Association of South Africa (NFMIA) congratulates
SEIFSA on achieving the 75th Anniversary milestone and wishes the Federation
many more years of contribution to the industry.
Established in 1943, the NFMIA – which also celebrate its 75th birthday anniversary this
year – is an Association of member companies that are involved in the manufacturing
of both semi-finished and finished goods manufactured from non-ferrous metals. The
membership includes several of South Africa’s largest Non-Ferrous Metal manufacturers
which are active not only in South Africa and Africa, but also internationally across the
globe, from the USA to Europe and South-East Asia.
The raw material used by most members for their beneficiation process is predominantly
scrap metal purchased from local recyclers and includes, but is not limited to, copper and
copper alloys, aluminium, zinc, lead and tungsten.
Since 2001, the NFMIA has lobbied both the Department of Trade and Industry and
Internation Trade Administration Commission and, in recent years, the Department
of Economic Development (EDD) and National Treasury to limit the export of scrap
metal in order to increase availability at affordable prices to local beneficiators. To this
extent, a working partnership was formed with other predominantly non-ferrous-driven
Associations such as AFSA, CDAA and SAIF that still continues today. The partnership has
resulted in the Scrap Metal Price Preference Policy of September 2013.
The NFMIA is the only Association in SEIFSA accredited under the Second Hand Goods
Act. Its members had input into both the drawing up and recent amendments to the Act
and now enjoy exemptions from some of the onerous administration encumbered in
compliance, and will no longer have to hold all scrap metal purchased for a period of seven
days before use.
The NFMIA is also an active member of the SARS Metal Industries Forum, where there is
interaction with the various divisions within SARS and Government Departments such as
Customs Compliance, VAT, and Import / Export tariffs, Dti, ITAC and EDD.
