Dawid Malan Security Manager / Sekuriteitsbestuurder News from Leitch / Nuus vanaf Leitch I hope all our homeowners had a lovely and peaceful Easter with your families. If you had visited San Lameer over Easter, you might have had a chance to cycle, run or walk on the extentions we have added to the mountain bike trail. We added a new little loop on route 6 of about an extra 60 metres. The major extention and construction occurrred on route 5. Here we added in an extended loop below the trailer park and also emcompassing some open water at the fishing dam. The loop has some amazing new bridges, steps and scenery. The added distance is yet to be established. Please make use of these amazing new additions and ride safe. After the construction of the MTB trail, it became apparent that San Lameer also needed a new area for relaxation and amongst other things, bird watching. Under the guidance of our Managing Director, Mr Pienaar, the area chosen was a dam on the Trafalgar side of the estate which had become overgrown with reeds and natural coastal forest. An existing land protrusion into the water made it an ideal candidate as this would allow for greater access to the open water that we would expose. The small patch of swamp hibiscus and costal silver leaf forest was removed with great care to expose two lovely protected red milk wood trees and a coral tree that will in time provide lovely shade. Some minor earthworks and soil to level off the area was needed, and a TLB to smooth it off ready to be paved. While this was happening, the reeds were being brush cut, hand pulled and burnt in an effort to remove them so that we could expose the open water. It was a long and painstaking exercise but yielded a magnificent product in the end. In an effort to retain the water, which is groundcover from the surrounding hills of Trafalgar village, a weir with an overflow was built under the bridge leading to the dam. This allows for the dam to remain full but also overflow into our lagoon system if the water levels rise substantially. The island jutting out into the water was then paved, landscaped with extra trees and shrubs. Benches added for relaxing and bird watching. The dam banks were seeded with a wild grass seed mixture to protect them and attract seed eating birds to the area. A bird feeder has also been erected to attract birds. So far the dam has been a huge success from an environmental side. The dam has attracted numerous bird species, giant and pied kingfishers, yellow billed ducks, white faced ducks, moor hens, comorants and our beloved hadedas. So far barbell and tilapia fish species have been seen swimming around, being chased by two terrapins (relatives of the tortoise/turtle). The droppings and spoor of the cape clawless otter have also been identified. However, no fishing is allowed. Please go and enjoy this lovely space we have created. Sunset with a bottle of wine would be my time of choice.
