Outreach Activities Emphasize Oneness with Others by Tricia Lothschutz Clarke Sophomore Skyler Quade Reflects on Mission Trip: This experience made me reflect on my life and realize that we all have hardships, but some are much more challenging and can even come down to a matter of survival. I see myself as a more compassionate person toward people in poverty and more aware of things I can do to help when I see people in need. I also learned that I can use my own skills and talents, and by teaching and sharing with others, both of our lives can be enlightened. I definitely felt a oneness with everyone I encountered on the trip, not only with my team members, but everyone we met and helped out. We all have to stick up for each other when a group of people is being oppressed, because at the core, we are all humans and have the same basic needs. 12 | S A L T MAGAZINE The diverse service events and immersion trips provided through the Sisters of Charity, BVM Outreach/Volunteer ministry embody BVM core values of freedom, justice, education and charity. They provide opportunities for participants to learn about and live out these values and get to know the BVM community. Participants use their gifts, grow in faith and community, and cultivate a deeper awareness of social justice issues by walking with the suffering of today—responding with compassion, providing for the well-being of others, and standing up for the oppressed and marginalized. Students Enriched Through Outreach Efforts This year has provided many opportunities to collaborate with campus ministry at Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa, working with passionate Clarke students. As volunteers, these young people are eager to make an impact, grow in their faith, build new relationships, and expand their worldview.
