Saint Ursula Academy Honors Two Long-time Teachers as they Retire from Teaching
Sandy Campbell
Sandy Campbell is retiring from teaching after 44 years, 38 of
those years at SUA. She has been a key part of the Saint Ursula
science department since the early 1980’s, and has taught
Chemistry and science to thousands of students during her
years at SUA. Many students were so inspired by her words,
they chose careers in science. Others found confidence and
courage from her words, “Buck up, little women.”
Sandy is also the one to watch each Halloween when she puts
her make-up skills to work for the best costume.
As Sandy reflects on her years at
SUA, she shares “I have always
tried to make my “Little Women”
see chemistry is everywhere. I
want them to think chemistry is
fun so I have loved my Halloween
tradition of decorating my room,
dressing up in creepy costumes
and teaching chemistry through
exciting demonstrations.”
Former student Courtney Smith ’12, shared this
experience about Mrs. Campbell.
My fondest memory of your class
comes from the time that you sat me
down alone after class and spoke to
me because you saw how much I was
struggling with course concepts. You
took the time to sit me down and tell
me that you saw how hard I was trying
and that you were there for me.  You
were my biggest cheerleader.  You never
gave up on me and I will never be able
to thank you enough for that.  You said,
“Little woman, you listen here.  You
CAN do it.”  Well I want to let you know
that I DID do it. After SUA, I went on to succeed tremendously
in college as a Psychology Major (sorry, no Chemistry for me…),
taught English abroad in Slovakia on a Fulbright grant, and
am now studying for my Master’s in International Education
in Washington, D.C. at the George Washington University.  No
longer a “little woman” I am now a full-grown woman of faith,
integrity and courage.  Thank you for being a part of my journey
and I wish you nothing but the best for your retirement.  You
