Lydia Breitenstein traveled
to Iceland on an international
study abroad trip called “The
Green Program.” She studied
Icelandic history, geothermal
and hydroelectric energy, and
bio fuels made from rapeseed
oil. The Green Program’s goal
was to provide short term
trips to study the world’s
biggest problems in sustainable development. She hiked 5
miles to and from a geothermal river (and swam in 20 degree
Icelandic weather!), visited geothermal and hydroelectric
plants, and hiked on a shrinking glacier. Iceland runs on 100%
renewable energy (70% hydroelectric power, 30% geothermal
power) to power industry, heat homes, and provide electricity
to all its population. Breitenstein is a 4th year student at
the University of Cincinnati and is a part of the mechanical
engineering co-op for RBI Solar in Cincinnati working with
solar panel mounting systems. She has developed a passion
for renewable energy which is how she landed in Iceland.
