After a day of great food, amazing entertainment, and uplifting music, the day just wouldn’t be complete without sowing into our future - the children. The Faith Community of St. Sabina has put the needs of children at the forefront of their outreach efforts for years. On a day when the community comes together in the name of peace and fellowship, it wouldn’t be complete if something weren’t done for the children. A portion of the children living in the Auburn-Gresham community attend public schools and come from families that rely on public assistance and free afterschool programs. Every child’s first day of school should be filled with positive and fun memories. In an effort to make sure this happens, St. Sabina hosts a “Book Bag Give-Away”. There were 800 book bags filled with school supplies that students need to be successful and productive on their educational journey.

Every year, lines are wrapped around the edifice of St. Sabina church with parents and their kids bursting at the seams waiting to receive their very own book bag filled with ‘goodies’ from none other than, Fr. Mike (as the kids in the neighborhood affectionately call him). Fr. Michael L. Pfleger, senior pastor of St. Sabina, passes out a book bag to every child in line until the very last child has received one. Fr. Pfleger has a heart for the Auburn-Gresham community and the children that reside in it. St. Sabina Church believes that every child has the capacity to be great if they are given the right tools to do so. A solid education is one of the best gifts that can be given to ensure a child’s future!
