Sacred Places Fall 2013 | Page 9

In addition to the United Methodist cohort, which is dispersed geographically, we are working with an ecumenical group of ten churches in the Fishtown neighborhood, in a project supported by a grant from the Lilly Endowment. The work is progressing quickly as Partners has already completed building and economic-impact assessments for each of the congregations. In Fishtown, we are contending with a unique set of challenges and opportunities common to most all of the congregations in the area. In particular, we have observed that many of the congregations have diminished in size and no longer worship in their sanctuaries throughout the year. They also maintain underutilized common spaces, classrooms, and offices. In this neighborhood and parts of nearby Kensington, where space is at a premium, such underused space is a key asset that has the potential to become a game changer for many of these churches.
