REACHING NEW HEIGHTS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL
Middle School classrooms are lively places! Having moved from
a homeroom setting into Middle School’s departmental structure,
students take on more specialized and demanding course work.
Enduring authors are read, and students delve into ancient and
modern history. An interdisciplinary humanities program is intro-
duced in 7th and 8th grade, with ‘what we know’ and ‘how we know
it’ studied more extensively in science classes. Learning is extended
farther off-site in special class trips. Seventh graders attend Space
Academy in Huntsville, Ala., and 8th graders visit Washington, D.C.
Adolescents in Middle School need room to discover their own
identity. They also need the security of clear boundaries and caring
adults willing to serve as mentors. An Advisory Program provides
each student with a special adult advocate. Moreover, faculty and
coaches guide students, helping to create opportunities for Middle
School students to make thoughtful decisions, articulate goals and
develop leadership skills as they prepare for high school and beyond.
