“Our local waterproofing industry is not
governed by trade associations or
professional bodies who could be laymen
‘watch dogs for best practice’. This will
however change in the not so distant future
with the formation of such a national
body,” says Slade.
“Currently the recommended Code of
Best Practice, SANS 10400, is followed by
the majority of contractors. This standard
requires updating to include the new
technologies; however, the principles are
the same. In addition, the technologies
used must be applied by the manufacturer’s
guideline application specification and
quality control plan and these
specifications and applications must be
monitored by a qualified inspector,”
explains Slade.

but was causing damage to ceilings and
tenant’s stock. After an extensive site
inspection, it was confirmed that the
existing jointing system on the rooftop
parking area had perished and accounted
for 80% of major water ingress.
The existing jointing system utilised a
closed cell on the structure gap, which had
deteriorated and become brittle. The
anchor bolts had penetrated through the
underlying membrane, all which allowed
for major water ingress.
The success of this type of project is
directly related to the quality of the
expansion joint. Eastgate had called upon
numerous waterproofing specialists, and
all had failed to contain the leaks from the
rooftop parking deck expansion joints.

Waterproofing Specialists to replace the
existing jointing system – after conducting
in-depth research and a year-long trial of
the joint, it was found to be successful.
The expansion jointing system used uses
a less invasive application as the anchor
bolts are not adhered to the substrate, but
rather to the centre of the joint.
