The third and final 2017 CPD Conference was held at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg. he first SAFAL conference was held in March in Durban at Zimbali Resort and the second in Cape Town at the Two Oceans Aquarium in June. The final conference was hosted at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg on 25 October 2017. The Johannesburg conference saw leading professionals in the construction industry – architects, contractors and roofing companies in South Africa – gathered to discuss advanced coated steel technologies, paint coating technology and metal cladding. To kick things off, Faizal Chavoos from SAFAL Steel took to the stand giving a detailed account of what steel is, its history, manufacturing process, properties and mechanism. He said that the manufacturing of steel is like cooking – making food – adding different spices and the like. He also shared videos demonstrating alloy manufacturing as well as installation properties. After a short interval, Daniel van Deventer from Beckers presented about paint systems for steel pointing out that there are five steps to coating and a coating protects while colours add to the lifespan of the product. The first step is to clean and pre-treat the surface with primer, adding a top coat, laminating or embossing and recoiling for shipment. The five-step process reduces environmental impact on the steel. He explained that maintenance of the steel plays a role in how long the product will last.
