The volume of greywater wasted in townships is modest when compared to that consumed by suburban washing machines that use up to 150ℓ per load, depending on the machine’s efficiency. A sure-fire way for suburban households to save money and water is to install this system and use the waste water generated by washing machines and dishwashers to flush their toilets, or to wash their cars, paving and windows. An adapted system can also be installed in suburban households, where shower and bathwater collects in an underground trough and is then pumped up to the cistern. This adapted system costs about R5 000 to install. Greywater can even be used to water gardens – in fact, the residues and soaps in a typical household’s greywater can provide useful sulphates and nitrates which some experts say is more beneficial to the garden than clean tap water.
