The City of Cape Town ’ s Transport and Urban Development Authority is set to spend about R57-million on constructing 340 Breaking New Ground ( BNG ) houses .
The BNG site is located on the corner of Edison Drive and Herschel Way in Belhar and is set to commence on 20 April 2018 and to take about 24 months to complete , if all goes according to plan .
The beneficiaries of the project are from Belhar , Bellville South , Ravensmead and Elsies River and they are chosen from the City ’ s waiting list in accordance with the Housing Allocation Policy .
This Belhar-Pentech BNG housing project entails the building of semidetached and free-standing single-storey houses , as well as the installation of electrical infrastructure , street lighting and sidewalks . “ This project speaks to the City ’ s commitment to excellence in delivering basic services and committing resources to creating a sense of place in less formal areas . It is also one of many that we have planned to roll out throughout the City .
“ Our housing deficit is one of our biggest challenges and we are building the City one house at a time . We face a massive housing backlog and we are doing our best to expedite the delivery of housing opportunities in the city . Owning a home provides an asset but it also allows families to live in dignity and gives our residents a sense of belonging and security ,” says , the City ’ s Mayoral Committee member for Transport and Urban Development , Councillor Brett Herron .
“ I am happy about the start of this project as it means that residents who have been dreaming of being homeowners can now see that their dreams are about to translate to reality . The development is close to the Cape Peninsula University of Technology , primary and secondary schools and the St Vincent Clinic . There are also open spaces that will be paved with some landscaping to create spaces where children can play , and residents can socialise ,” says the City ’ s Mayoral Committee member for Area Central , Councillor Siyabulela Mamkeli .
