EVENTS Constructing new perspectives Hosted under the theme ‘growth, development and transformation’, the fifth annual construction management conference took place late last year. By Ntsako Khosa | All images Ntsako Khosa The Birchwood Hotel Conference Centre was filled with professionals ready to engage about the sector. H eld over three days, the South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP) was held at Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre from 18 to 20 October 2017. Each session, panel discussion and speaker offered insightful information about what is happening (and needs to happen) in the sector. DAY 1: MENTORING Kicking off at 7am with registration, attendees gathered in master classes that provided focused learning sessions by experts in each area. Master Class 1, presented by Celestine Jeftha from mentoring4success, addressed structured mentoring in the workplace giving professionals a brief insight into the critical importance and significant long-term value and benefit of implementing a structured mentoring programme (SMP) in the organisation. This ensures that crucial knowledge transfer takes place as well as empowerment and effective transformation to fast track professional registration. She handed the group exercises to engage the professionals with one another and the content. Master Class 2 gave an overview of Health, Safety, and Environment (SHE) management. The masterclass, hosted by NOSA , encompassed an overview of modules offered during the Construction Health and Safety (CHS) training. It provides professionals specialising in construction and 10 JANUARY - FEBRUARY 2018 AFFORDABLE SA HOUSING project management. NOSA focused on key components of CHS, such as the role of CHS in tender submissions and cost estimations; controlling employee wellness in the construction environment; and site (or camp) establishment risk. The mediation, arbitration and conciliation masterclass followed presented by Marietjie Botes from RICS. The class looked at the introduction to major dispute avoidance and Conference attendees registering for the sessions.
