Stewartry FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/RUGBYCLUBMAG We are proud to be associated with Stewartry Rugby Football Club “The Stewartry Rugby Football Club was reformed in 1970 so next year is our 50th birthday. I played in the next eight seasons starting as an 18-year-old. My next connection with the club was coaching my son’s age group through junior rugby. I have only recently joined the committee and became president at this year’s AGM. In total, I’ve had about seventeen years of involvement. The most enjoyable part for me was playing, closely followed by coaching my son’s team, and my current role is more challenging than enjoyable. We have started the season well with good numbers of players keen to play, and an enthusiasm in the committee to make the club sociable and sustainable. Our new gym is working well with good numbers seeking membership. We hope to have lighting on our seconds pitch so that we can hold midweek games for a development team which will ease and enable transition from our strong youth section into adult rugby for both males and females. We also hope this project will encourage representative teams at all age groups from Dumfries and Galloway to once again play other regions. In five years time I hope that our club has enough income streams to keep it financially sustainable, and also that it will have grown the value that it adds to our community here in S W Scotland.” Robin Austin, President Danny Burton isn’t originally from the region but he has collected many memories and friends over his time at Stewartry Rugby Club. He told us, “Unfortunately injury has taken its toll on me and I had to retire last season as front row hooker. The club however have many good young players coming through and I’m sure they will compete successfully for many more seasons. Our company, West Scottish Lamb Ltd are proud sponsors of the club and we have always enjoyed supporting the lads. They provide a great hub for the local community and I have always found everyone very welcoming. It’s good to see the teams competing so well this season in quite a tough league and myself, Philip and all the staff at West Scottish Lamb Ltd wish everyone at Stewartry Rugby Club many more years of enjoyment and success, looking forward to seeing you all soon!” 32 Issue 88 www.rugbyclubmag.com 33
