My main position was centre where I enjoyed my defensive role in tackling and being able to offload quick and accurate ball to my teammates. It was difficult to go down to the club once I hung my boots up but after a while away I returned and was able to enjoy the games and the great club atmosphere which has not waned till this day! “My company PJC Accounting are a club sponsor and I have always enjoyed putting a little back into a club which gave me so much. Swanage and Wareham Rugby Club have a great history of fathers and sons who have pulled on the jersey over the decades and I have had the privilege to stand alongside many of them on the pitch. I would like to wish everyone at the club the very best of continued success for many more years to come!” 7 Filleul Road, Sandford Woods, Wareham, Dorset BH20 7AW “I moved to the area in 1984 and have been Secretary for the club for the past twenty years. I played for the club as a back-row player, mainly flanker until I was 57 and coached both my lads Tom and James from U7s. Tom’s playing position was wing or full back and James, who is currently in the Royal Marines was a back row player. The club can lose players when they come of age and go away to Uni but enjoyed a great season and do their best to provide a good environment for all. I also have sponsored the club over the years with Centaur Financial Mgt. Best wishes to everyone for the 2019/2020 campaign!” Kevin Large • Butchery • hotfood • Bakery, • Cash machine • Deli Counter • Lottery Instant : @costcutterfoodshopswanage T: 01929 422549 A: 208 High Street, Swanage, BH19 2PQ Keith Tomes has been involved with Swanage and Wareham RFC as player, coach and club captain. He is the current coaching coordinator and took time out recently to talk with Rugby Club Magazine, saying, “I attended the local Purbeck School and friends encouraged me to join the club with them as a 16-year-old. I was initially a back-row player but when I came out of the colts I moved to the front row and 66 Issue 87 hooker position. Apart from a year out with a broken leg I remained virtually injury free apart from the usual knocks. “When my career ended around 2000 both my sons Chris and Darren had already been involved in the minis and at age 34 Chris is a current 1st team player and scrum half. Chris and his teammates will have benefited from last season’s experience and I find there is a quiet confidence and energy focused on the coming season with the squad bouncing so strongly from the previous season. “As a club we have a great reputation for continuing to produce fathers and then their sons who traditionally join our club and develop into players, hopefully this will always be the case. We also have a very good relationship with the local army corps, in fact one of the lads who joined us has recently been asked to play for the corps and I’m sure our club and coaches had something to do with that. My business Costcutters are a sponsor and we have always like to help out when we can. “Players of all levels and abilities are welcome at Swanage and Wareham Rugby Club and I feel this mix helps to bolster and level our teams out. Myself, Chris and Darren are very proud of our association with this great club and we wish everyone good luck for the 2019/2020 campaign!”
