RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB
Swanage and Wareham RFC enjoyed a fine season last time around
and are now looking to build on their success. Rugby Club Magazine
recently caught up with Club Representative John Constable to find
out more about the club.
Involvement
John told us, “I started playing
Rugby at the club as a 16-year-old;
I actually played Football for the
school 1st XV in the morning and
then played Rugby for the Colts in
the afternoon. In those days there
was no Mini and Youth Rugby. Over
time I joined the committee in my
mid-twenties, skippered the club
3rd XV for ten seasons and then
took on the role of fixture secretary,
which I have held for probably
well over twenty-five years now.
When a serious stomach illness
stopped me playing I still wanted to
keep involved in the game so have
continued in the administrative side
of things.”
The Role
“I would say the most challenging
aspect is the changing game - when
I was playing I would play every
week, sometimes twice in the
weekend, now things are different
and its accepting this, then trying
to work out what is best so that the
modern player can play when he
wishes to.
The plus side is keeping in touch,
not only at the club but across the
wider rugby community, with
players that I have known for many
years and those I have met only
recently. As well as being involved
at the club I have been a County
member for over twelve years, and
had the honour of being County
President in recent years.”
Atmosphere
“After the success of last season
the mood is pretty upbeat. However,
we know the coming season will
have new challenges which we
will have to meet as they arise. The
main aim will be to get full squads
