Sileby Town
“I played for the club when it was first founded;
my friend and I went down and trained, playing
a couple of times as well. Work commitments
eventually stopped me playing but I have
continued to support the club. Quite a few of the
players train at the gym and it will be a tough
season so the club will need a large and loyal
player base.
I’ve sponsored the club for the last six or seven
years and we offer them a cheaper day rate at the
gym. I’d like to take this opportunity to encourage
the club to stay energized, continue progressing
and pushing to get to higher positions.”

which means it takes a lot of hammer with two adult
teams training and playing on it. We seem to get by
(mostly thanks to very efficient drainage!) but this is
something we’re definitely planning to improve.
RC: Would you consider yours to be a community club?
PL: Very much so. We actively involve the local
community and always provide updates on our progress
in the village magazine. We also run a charity event
each year where we pull a 10-tonne truck for 10 miles
through local villages (using nothing but muscle power),
collecting cash and sponsorship along the way.
Over the years we’ve raised well over £30,000 for
a wide range of charities, including the Derbyshire
Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance (“DLRAA”),
Brainstrust (a brain tumour support charity) and
Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
RC: What do you believe could be some of the biggest
challenges the club may face in the coming years?
PL: Getting new/young blood in to the club is
definitely our biggest challenge. If we’re to maintain a
competitive edge and continue our good progress to

date we’ll definitely need to attract younger players.
Most of our squad are in their 30s (or older!) so this a
huge area of focus for us.
RC: What are the clubs ambitions for the next five
years?
PL: Apart from expanding our pitch count and
attracting younger players we also want to build some
new facilities that are more conducive to rugby and offer
a social element. Our current “clubhouse” was originally
built as a cricket pavilion (believe it or not!) and doesn’t
really have an adequate social space or any bar facilities,
not to mention a limited number of showers!
