Sean ORiordan spoke to Rugby Club
Magazine recently about his positive
association with Cork Con, “I suppose
much of my involvement came through my
son Andrews interest in the club. As a dad
on the touchline an opportunity arose to
offer some scrum advice to some of the
teenage lads when I noticed they were
positioned out of line. I have to say the
lads did look at me with some scepticism
at the time but having the experience of
being a front row hooker myself I was
able to demonstrate that with the correct
stance and technique how, even when
outnumbered, you could still hold a front
row of 3 forwards at bay if your body parts
were technically in the right position. The
coach at the time told me I would be down
there the following week coaching but I said
no that I would do the necessary coaching
qualifications first. Coaching underage
rugby has been a great experience for me
and I have discovered that sometimes it’s
the simple observations that are important
whether having the understanding that
you’re not training adults and therefore
your approach may need to be different
or that nutrition and diet before and after
matches could be the adjustment needed
to change results. In my experience If a
child wants to be there he will learn how
to play rugby.
One of the highlights while coaching
was going on tour with 60 plus U13s to
London in 2015 where we were hosted
by Battersea Ironsides Rugby Club.
The whole management including their
President made the tour a most memorable
occasion for the coaches who travelled
and the players, many thanks from all at
Cork Constitution FC.
